Capitalize on Your Body Type Ladies!
Have you ever wondered what body type you have? Maybe you already know! For most of us this can be a confusing thing to figure out. You may think you are, for instance, an hour glass figure, when actually, you are a something completely different- like I did! I am a rectangle figure. Although my bust and waist measurements are the same, my waist isn’t 25 percent smaller than either my hips or bust measurement, so I fall into the rectangle category. Why is this important? Well, when buying clothes this information can steer you to silhouettes that enhance your body figure. We can all agree when we pick clothes that fit and look terrific on us, we feel better about ourselves and are more confident. More importantly, we are less likely to buy clothes that will only hang in our closet instead of on us!
Steps to determine body type:
Take your measurements. Use a fresh tape measure because they tend to stretch out over time. Get someone to help you if you can.
Shoulders: Measure shoulder to shoulder-front and back, or wrap around your shoulders like a cape. _________________ inches
Measure around the widest part of your breast. Take a deep breathe in and then let out. You don’t want this measurement to be too tight. ______________ inches
Measure around the smallest part of your waist. Usually this is just a quarter to a half inch below your belly button. (Don’t forget to breathe) ____________ inches
Now measure around the widest part of your hips. Again, not too tight. You want an accurate measurement to help determine your body shape! ______________inches
2. Now it is time to determine your body shape!
You are an inverted triangle if your shoulder or bust measurements are more than 5 percent bigger than your hip measurement. For example, if your shoulders measure 36 inches, your hips will be 34 1/4 inches or smaller
You are a rectangle if your shoulder, bust and hip measurements are within 5 percent of each other. Your waist is less than 25 percent smaller than your shoulder or bust measurements. For example, if your shoulders measure 36 inches, your waist will be 27 inches or more.
You are an hourglass figure if your shoulder and hip measurements are within 5 percent of each other. Your waist is at least 25 percent smaller than your shoulder, hip and bust measurements. For example, if your shoulders and hips measure 36 inches, your waist is 27 inches or smaller.
You are a triangle if your hip measurement is more than 5 percent bigger than your shoulder or bust measurements. For example, if your shoulders measure 36 inches, your hips are 37 3/4 inches or larger.
You are a round shape if you are generally well-proportioned
and carry the most weight through your bust and mid-section.
You are not necessarily as curvy through your hips
and you don’t have a well-defined waistline.
Style tip: After you determine your body type, Google “celebrities that are (insert your body shape) shape.” I Googled “celebs with a rectangle shape.” My favorite celebrities were Catherine Zeta Jones and Cameron Diaz, and I could see my body shape was similar to theirs! Also, usually celebs have stylists that spend a lot of time and money looking for clothes that best fit their client’s body shape! Why not capitalize on their knowledge?
